Alpinism and global warming: panel discussion with extreme mountaineer Dani Arnold

The fascination for summit destinations in the Alps seems unabated. The conditions for outdoor sports are changing just as rapidly: global warming is having irreversible consequences for alpinism. What does this mean for extreme mountain sports? Dani Arnold provides information.

Dani Arnold, which mountains are you currently climbing?
I've just come from the Matterhorn in Zermatt, but for once not from climbing. I'm currently working on a documentary about the 6 big north faces with German television.

You've already been on the Patagonian Torre Egger, the Mooses Tooth in Alaska, Mont Blanc... What fascinates you about the Uri Alps?
The homeland is unbeatable. The great diversity that exists here is simply brilliant. We can have cool adventures in winter and summer: We have many small climbing gardens to large alpine walls, we have limestone cliffs, we have large granite and gneiss walls...

But the alpine landscape is changing with global warming. What changes are you already noticing?
For example, just now on the Matterhorn: normally the north face should be well snow-covered at this time of year, but it's already almost black. That's tragic. On the first weekend in April, we were already at the zero-degree mark at 4000m. That's not good!

On April 25, you will be taking part in a panel discussion on alpinism and global warming in Altdorf - what can people look forward to?
I will try to give an insight into my world and projects and talk about the challenges that exist out there. I'm really looking forward to it and, above all, I'm very excited about the exchange and the questions.

On April 25, 2024, extreme mountaineer and Netflix star Dani Arnold, cultural scientist and institute director Boris Previšić (Uri Institute Cultures of the Alps) and sustainability officer Carmen Carfora (Andermatt Swiss Alps / Andermatt-Sedrun Sport AG) will discuss the relationship between alpinism and global warming at the Turnhalle Winkel in Altdorf. Tickets are available at https://www.kulturen-der-alpen.ch/tickets.
