There is no doubt that Ladislaus Krupski, born in 1882 as a Polish "secondo", found the leading role of his life under the stage name Hanns in der Gand with his immense repertoire, his versatile knowledge of the language and his captivating performance skills. The native of Uri became probably the most prominent folk song researcher and folk song singer in Switzerland. On behalf of the Swiss Folklore Society (SGV), he traveled throughout Switzerland on his "collecting trips" to the remotest hamlets to track down traditional songs, which he meticulously notated, later recorded on wax cylinders and made available to a wide public as an editor and concert singer.
