In the Alpine region, forest management generates a lot of biomass, which today remains partially unused. With a pyrolysis system, these regional wood residues can be used as well. Pyrolysis produces high-quality biochar from biomass, which releases heat. Especially in the critical winter months, this heat can be converted into climate-positive electricity.
If the produced biochar is used in agriculture or construction, a long-term greenhouse gas sink is created. Pyrolysis as a negative emission technology is therefore one of the important pillars of the federal government’s net-zero target 2050. The aim of this project is to promote the production and use of biochar and to adapt a profitable pyrolysis plant system specifically to the Alpine region.
