Hanns in der Gand

soldier singer, song leader

A stone's throw away from the Tell monument in Altdorf, a commemorative plaque has been placed at the Café Central, which recalls Hanns in der Gand's merits for the folk song heritage of Uri. His work as a folk song singer and folk song researcher is not only of importance for the can-ton of Uri. As a folk song researcher with an appreciative view for all languages and idioms of Switzerland, he paved the way for the recognition of the Romansh language with his possibili-ties.

Today, the entire estate of Hanns in der Gands lies dormant in the Swiss Folk Song Archive in Basel. Existing audio recordings have been secured and digitized at the Swiss National Sound Archives in Lugano.

75 years after the death of Hanns in der Gand, it is high time for those responsible at the "House of Folk Music" to take on this precious fund and make this important man from Uri accessible to a broad public.

The portrait "HANNS IN DER GAND Soldatensänger, Liederfürst" by Roman Walker is published by the Zytglogge publishing house: www.zytglogge.ch
