Renewable energy sources and the Alpine region

Renewable energy sources and the Alpine region

The federal government's Energy Strategy 2050 combines the phase-out of nuclear energy in the midterm with an expansion of renewable electricity production and an improvement in energy efficiency. In the context of the current distortions in the energy markets caused by the Russian offensive war in Ukraine, the energy security situation in Switzerland is tense. Enhanced electricity production in the Alps could contribute to the energy demand, especially in the critical winter half-year.

At the same time, the Alpine region is a place of recreation and the habitat of rare animal and plant species. The increasing use and protection interests are therefore in conflict with each other.

Resolving such conflicts of interest is traditionally the task of the law. In the field of electricity production in the Alps, legal provisions from spatial planning law, nature and heritage protection law, constitutional law and energy law come together. This creates a multitude of new conflicting legal questions, which Dr. Schreiber deals within his energy law research.
