Book launch "Valley history. Ursern in the 19th and 20th centuries" by Martin Schaffner, March 23, 2023

The alpine high valley of Ursern in the canton of Uri is the focus of this volume of essays - not the current tourist hotspot in Andermatt, but the transformation of the mountain region over the last 200 years. 21 independent texts shed light on various aspects of life in the valley and the history of Ursern. They cover formative natural events, the use of natural resources such as alpine pastures and peat and the centuries-long collective administration of the valley as "Allmäini". But forgotten forms of work, which were often carried out by women, also find a place in this book. And, of course, the proximity to the Gotthard, which made the Ursernal a hub for transnational travel routes.

An atmospheric search for traces through the centuries, in which the relationship between man and nature repeatedly pushes its way to the surface - and thus finds answers to current questions. With a series of pictures by Basel photographer Serge Hasenböhler.

Martin Schaffner is Professor Emeritus of Modern General History at the University of Basel. He has worked intensively on the history of the Ursern Valley, including as head of the renovation of the valley archive (2003-2006) and as an associated researcher in the interdisciplinary ValUrsern project (2009-2013). At the Institute Cultures of the Alps, he contributed his experience and expertise to the project Uri in Transition.
