Wolves and grazing - what next?

Wolves and grazing - what next?

Prof. Dr. Roland Norer (University of Lucerne), Kurt Schuler (President of Korporation Uri) and Josef Walker (Cantonal Hunting Administration) will discuss the future of wolves and pasture management at a public evening event on Wednesday, June 12, 2024, in the Zeughaus Parterre.

Wolf conservation, and alpine farming in particular, is an ongoing topic in politics and the public sphere. The associated legal issues between the Bern Convention, the EU Habitats Directive and national law are now keeping administrations and courts busy. More than ever, legal answers are needed.

On the occasion of the publication of the book “Wolfsmanagement im Alpenraum. Rechtsfragen zwischen Artenschutz und Weidehaltung” by Prof. Roland Norer, several events at selected locations in the German-speaking Alpine arc will facilitate a discussion process focusing on Alpine pasture management at the level of those affected, politics and science. The publication discusses topics such as protection status, favorable conservation status, interventions (deterrence, removal of problem and high-risk wolves, population regulation), serious damage to livestock, herd protection measures, compensation, defense shot, wolf-dog hybrids, animal welfare law and zoning. The focus is on alpine grazing in Switzerland, Austria and Germany. Last but not least, ways of achieving coexistence between large carnivores and alpine farming through re- and proactive wolf management will be highlighted.

The Alpine journey also takes him to the canton of Uri, where the return of the wolves has already begun. In an exchange with Kurt Schuler, President of the Uri Corporation, and the cantonal hunting administrator Josef Walker, the new book will be presented and possible options for action will be discussed.

Registration for the event by June 10 at the latest by e-mail to veranstaltungen@kulturen-der-alpen.ch
